Quick Answer
If your child has Medi-Cal, routine dental care costs you nothing. Denti-Cal covers exams, cleanings, fluoride, sealants, X-rays, fillings, crowns and extractions for children under 21 with no copay and no deductible. Orthodontics is covered only for severe cases that meet a scoring threshold. In Chino, Say Cheese Kids Dental accepts Medi-Cal and verifies your benefits before the visit.
What Denti-Cal Actually Covers for Children
Medi-Cal Dental — still widely called Denti-Cal — covers a full range of children’s dental care. For members under 21, these services carry no out-of-pocket cost:
- Exams — twice per year, including the first visit by age one
- Cleanings — twice per year, more often where clinically justified
- Fluoride varnish — up to three times per year for higher-risk children
- Dental sealants — on permanent molars, the most cost-effective prevention available
- X-rays — when clinically indicated
- Fillings — tooth-coloured and amalgam
- Crowns — stainless steel on baby teeth
- Pulp treatment — the pediatric equivalent of a root canal
- Extractions — including emergency removals
- Space maintainers — after a baby tooth is lost early
- Emergency care — for pain, swelling and injury
That list covers the overwhelming majority of what a child actually needs. Most families using Denti-Cal at our practice never pay anything.
What Is Not Covered, or Only Partly
Being straight about the limits matters more than listing the benefits, because this is where parents get an unexpected bill.
Orthodontics is conditional
Denti-Cal covers braces only for handicapping malocclusion — severe bite problems assessed against a scoring system. A case must score 26 points or higher to qualify. Cosmetic crowding, mild spacing and most everyday alignment concerns do not meet that bar, even when treatment is clearly worthwhile.
If your child does not qualify, treatment is still available privately. Our braces and orthodontics consultations are free, and we will tell you honestly whether a Denti-Cal orthodontic referral is realistic before you pin hopes on it.
Age matters
Coverage is most generous under 21. Adult Denti-Cal benefits are considerably narrower, so a teenager approaching their twenty-first birthday should not delay treatment that is currently covered.
Not every dentist accepts it
Roughly a third of California dentists take Medi-Cal Dental. This is the practical barrier most families hit — the benefit exists but finding somewhere to use it takes effort. We accept it.
How Much Would the Same Care Cost Without Insurance?
For context, typical Southern California private-pay ranges look roughly like this:
- Exam and cleaning — $100 to $250 per visit
- Fluoride varnish — $30 to $60
- Sealants — $40 to $70 per tooth
- Tooth-coloured filling — $150 to $350
- Stainless steel crown — $300 to $600
- Extraction — $150 to $400
- Full braces — $3,000 to $7,000
A child needing two fillings and a crown could face $700 or more privately. Under Denti-Cal that same treatment costs nothing. These figures are general market ranges rather than our fees — ask any practice for their own schedule.
How to Check Whether Your Child Is Covered
Three ways, quickest first:
- Call us on (909) 479-6030. Our front desk can verify eligibility directly before you come in.
- Check BenefitsCal.com — log in to see current Medi-Cal status for everyone in your household.
- Call Medi-Cal Dental on 1-800-322-6384 for coverage questions and to confirm a provider.
Worth knowing: if your child has Medi-Cal medical coverage, dental is already included. There is no separate enrolment and no additional premium. Many parents do not realise this and go years without using it.
What Happens If You Do Not Qualify
Denti-Cal is not the only route. We accept most major PPO plans including Delta Dental, Cigna, MetLife, Aetna, United Concordia and Anthem Blue Cross — see our insurance page for the full list. CareCredit financing is available for families without coverage, and we verify benefits before treatment so you know the position in advance.
Common Questions
Does Denti-Cal cover my child’s first dental visit?
Yes, fully. The recommendation is a first visit by age one, and it is covered from the start. See what happens at a first dental visit.
How often can my child have a cleaning?
Twice per calendar year as standard, with additional cleanings where there is documented clinical need — higher cavity risk, orthodontic appliances, or certain medical conditions.
Are dental X-rays covered?
Yes, when clinically indicated. We take digital X-rays only where there is a reason to look, not routinely at every visit.
Does Denti-Cal cover braces?
Only for severe bite problems scoring 26 or above on the handicapping malocclusion assessment. Most cosmetic and mild alignment cases do not qualify. Our guide to Phase I and Phase II treatment explains what different cases involve.
What if my child needs emergency treatment?
Emergency dental care is covered. Call (909) 479-6030 straight away — we keep room for same-day emergency appointments. For a knocked-out permanent tooth, keep it in milk and come in immediately.
Do I need a referral?
No. You can contact us directly and we will check your eligibility.
Can my child keep the same dentist as they grow?
Yes. We treat children and teens from the first tooth through orthodontic treatment, so there is no need to change practice as they get older.
What if my income changes?
Report changes through BenefitsCal. Children qualify at considerably higher income thresholds than adults, so many families remain eligible after a pay rise that would end adult coverage.
Final Thoughts
The most common mistake we see is not a coverage problem — it is families with Denti-Cal who assume they cannot afford dental care and delay until a small cavity becomes an abscess. The cover is there, it includes prevention, and prevention is what stops the expensive problems from happening.
If you are unsure where you stand, call (909) 479-6030 and we will check before you book. Or request an appointment online and we will confirm your benefits when we call back.
