At What Age Should Kids Get Braces?

Most children begin braces between ages 9 and 14, once enough permanent teeth have come in. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends a first orthodontic check-up by age 7.

Age 7 is not when treatment usually starts. It is simply the earliest point a dentist can reliably spot crowding, crossbites, and jaw-growth problems, while they are still easy to guide. Many children are checked at 7, then monitored at routine visits until the right moment to begin.

Not sure where your child sits on that timeline? A short evaluation will tell you.

Why Braces?

Braces correct common orthodontic issues that can affect your child’s oral health and overall well-being. Misaligned teeth or an uneven bite can make brushing harder, increase the risk of cavities, gum disease, and tooth wear, and may cause speech or jaw problems. At Say Cheese Kids Dental & Orthodontics, Dr. Joshua Kohan carefully evaluates each child’s smile to determine the best treatment. Options include:

Types of Braces

We offer different types of orthodontic treatment tailored to each child’s individual needs, lifestyle, and the complexity of their treatment.

Explore each option in detail: kids braces, teen braces, braces for adults, and clear aligners including Invisalign and Angel Aligners. If something breaks during treatment, our orthodontic emergency guide explains what to do, and our guide to choosing an orthodontist covers what to ask at a consultation.

Wondering whether your child needs early treatment? Our guide to Phase I and Phase II orthodontics explains the difference and why most children need only one phase.

Braces or Clear Aligners?

Both straighten teeth. The right choice usually comes down to your child’s age, how complex the movement is, and how reliably they can stick to instructions.

Traditional Braces

Fixed in place, so they keep working whether or not your child remembers them. The dependable choice for most children.

  • Handles complex crowding and bite correction
  • Usually 18 to 24 months
  • Adjustments every 6 to 8 weeks
  • Nothing to lose or forget

Clear Aligners

Removable and barely visible. A good fit for older children and teens who will genuinely wear them.

  • Best for mild to moderate crowding
  • Often 12 to 18 months for suitable cases
  • Come out for meals, so no food restrictions
  • Must be worn 20 to 22 hours a day

Younger children with baby teeth are rarely aligner candidates. Our Invisalign in Chino page explains more, or we can look at your child’s case directly.

Early Treatment vs. Full Treatment

Orthodontic care for children is often described in two phases. Most kids only ever need one of them.
The Say Cheese Kids Dental team and office in Chino, CA

Phase 1 — Early Treatment

Ages 7 to 10. This happens while your child still has a mix of baby and permanent teeth. It is not about straightening every tooth — it is about fixing things that get harder to correct later, like a crossbite, severe crowding, or a narrow upper jaw.

  • Usually 6 to 12 months
  • Often an expander or partial braces
  • Most children do not need it

Phase 2 — Full Treatment

Ages 11 to 14. Standard comprehensive treatment, once most permanent teeth have arrived. Braces or aligners on the full arch, bringing every tooth into position and settling the bite.

  • Typically 18 to 24 months
  • Retainers follow to hold the result
  • Early treatment reduces Phase 2, but rarely replaces it

More detail on our Phase 1 and Phase 2 page — or we can simply tell you which phase your child is in.

What to Expect, Step by Step

Knowing the sequence ahead of time takes most of the worry out of it, for parents and for kids.
Child-friendly dental office on Central Ave in Chino, CA

Every plan starts with a look at your child’s bite.

  1. Orthodontic evaluation

We examine your child’s teeth, bite, and jaw development, take digital X-rays, and talk through what we see. If nothing needs doing yet, we will say so plainly.

  2. Treatment plan and records

You get a written plan: what we are correcting, which appliance, roughly how long, and what it costs after insurance. Nothing starts until you have had time to think about it.

  3. Fitting the braces

About an hour or two. No injections, no drilling. Brackets are bonded to the teeth and connected with a wire.

  4. Regular adjustments

Every 6 to 8 weeks we change the wire or elastics to keep teeth moving. Short visits, usually 20 to 30 minutes.

  5. Removal and retainers

Braces come off in a single visit. Retainers follow straight away — wearing them as directed is what keeps the result.

Living With Braces

The first week is the adjustment. After that, most kids stop noticing them.

Foods to skip

Hard, sticky, and chewy foods are what break brackets. Apples and carrots are fine cut into pieces, and corn is fine off the cob.

  • Ice and hard candy
  • Caramel and taffy
  • Popcorn kernels and nuts

Keeping teeth clean

Brackets trap food, so brushing after meals matters more than usual. Skipping it is how children finish treatment with straight teeth and white marks on them.

  • An interdental brush reaches around wires
  • A floss threader gets between teeth
  • Keep up regular cleanings

Soreness

Teeth usually ache for two or three days after placement and after each adjustment. Soft foods and age-appropriate pain relief handle it.

  • Yogurt, pasta, soup, smoothies
  • Orthodontic wax for rubbing wires

Sports

A mouthguard is strongly recommended for any contact sport. Standard guards do not fit properly over brackets.

  • Ask us for an orthodontic mouthguard
  • Keep it in the sports bag, not at home

Cost, Insurance, and Medi-Cal

Cost depends on what is being corrected and how long treatment runs, so a figure only means something after an evaluation. What we can tell you is how payment usually works.

  • Dental insurance. Many plans include a separate lifetime orthodontic benefit, kept apart from your regular annual maximum. We check your benefits before you commit and show the remaining balance in writing.
  • Medi-Cal and Denti-Cal. Treatment can be covered for children who meet the state’s medical-necessity criteria, scored on the bite rather than appearance. We carry out that assessment and explain the result either way.
  • Payment plans. For families paying out of pocket, in-house plans spread treatment across monthly payments.
  • CareCredit. Accepted here, with longer repayment terms for larger treatment.

Full details are on our insurance and payment options page. We are happy to check your benefits before you decide anything.

FAQs

Common Questions From Parents

At what age should my child see an orthodontist?

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends a first orthodontic check-up by age 7. Most children are not treated at that age — it is simply early enough to catch crowding, crossbites, and jaw-growth issues while they are easiest to guide.

How long will my child need braces?

Most treatment runs 18 to 24 months. Shorter early-treatment cases may take 6 to 12 months, and suitable aligner cases 12 to 18 months. The honest answer depends on what is being corrected and how consistently instructions are followed.

What types of braces are available for kids?

Traditional metal braces, ceramic (tooth-coloured) brackets, and clear aligners for suitable older children and teens. Expanders and partial braces are also used in early treatment.

Are braces painful for children?

Placing braces does not hurt — there are no injections or drilling. Teeth usually feel sore for two or three days afterwards and after each adjustment. Soft foods and age-appropriate pain relief are normally enough.

Can braces fix speech or bite problems?

Braces can correct bite problems such as crossbites, overbites, underbites, and open bites, which sometimes contribute to speech difficulties. Where speech is a concern, we would also suggest evaluation by a speech-language pathologist.

How do I find a kids orthodontist near me?

Look for a practice that treats children routinely, explains what it sees without pressure, and is willing to tell you when treatment is not needed yet. We provide orthodontic care in Chino and see families from Chino Hills, Ontario, Eastvale, Pomona, and Montclair.

Does my child need braces if only the top teeth are crooked?

Not necessarily, but the bite is assessed as a whole. Upper and lower teeth meet each other, so correcting one arch without accounting for the other can leave the bite worse than before.

What happens if we wait?

Some problems simply get no worse and can safely wait. Others — crossbites, severe crowding, impacted teeth — become harder, longer, or more invasive to treat later. That is the point of an early check: knowing which situation you are in.

Will my child need teeth removed?

Sometimes, when crowding is severe and there is no other way to create room. Expansion and other techniques often avoid it. If extraction is recommended, we will explain why and what the alternatives are.

Are retainers really necessary afterwards?

Yes. Teeth drift back toward their original positions without retention, and this is the single most common reason results are lost. Retainer wear is usually full-time at first, then nights only, often long-term.

Does Medi-Cal cover braces for children?

Orthodontic treatment can be covered under Medi-Cal and Denti-Cal for children who meet the state’s medical-necessity criteria, assessed by a scored evaluation of the bite rather than appearance. We can carry out that assessment and explain the outcome.

Can my child play sports with braces?

Yes, with a mouthguard. Standard guards do not fit properly over brackets, so ask us for one made for orthodontic patients.
